Harris Family in South Street Lambeth 1851 - 1871

During the early 1840s William & Elizabeth Harris had lived at Granby Place Lower Marsh Lambeth. By the mid to late 1840's several of their children had married and moved nearby.

The family were now living in Upper Marsh Lambeth and are recorded here on the 1851 census.

The fist members of the Harris family to move to South Street appear to be William & Elizabeth's son William & his wife Jane. William & Jane Harris married in 1847, they had two children born between 1852 & 1854 when they were living at 10 South Street.

William & Elizabeth's son James Banfield Moore Harris was living at 37 South Street with his family at the time of his son Lambert William Harris baptism in 1853.
William & Elizabeth's daughter Charlotte Matilda Harris Married Charles William Ward in 1851. They had 3 children born when they lived at 11 South Street between 1853 - 1862.

James Banfield Moore Harris & his wife Sophia in 1858 were living at 11 South Street with his parents William & Elizabeth for a brief period. His brother Charles with his wife Emma were also living here between 1858 & 1860.




The 1860's in South Street consisted of William & Elizabeth at 11 South Street & their son William with his wife Jane & their family at 9 South street. The 1861 census edit shows both families with William and Elizabeth living with her married daughter's family the Wards.


The map above shows the numbered houses in this section of South Street. Number 14 was a public house named The Maquis of Wellington. No Photographs have yet been found of the street or the pub, or any of the houses indentified as having been lived by the family.

The situation remained largely unchanged during the late 1860's. The Voters list below dated 1868 shows the two William Harris's, father & son listed as junior and senior at number 9 and 11 South Street respectively.


When the 1871 census was taken William & Jane Harris & family were still living at 9 South Street. Their son William had married 1867 and also lived with his parents until 1872 when he is recorded living at 10 South Street.

William & Elizabeth Harris in 1871 are listed on the census at 38 South Street. Elizabeth died here in August that year aged 80. Her husband William lived to the age of 86 and died in 1876 in the Lambeth Workhouse Infirmary.
